Homemade tortilla chips are super easy to make and you can season them anyway you like.
I chose to season these chips with cumin, Italian seasonings, paprika, black pepper and salt. I find this is a great combination. You can try this with pita bread as well.
Ingredients
3 to 4 tortillas
Salt to taste
Seasonings to taste
Oil for frying, such as corn, canola, or vegetable oil
Directions for fried chips
Add the oil to a medium-sized skillet and place over medium-high heat. Prepare a plate lined with paper towels for draining and cooling the chips.
Cut the tortillas into wedges or strips. When the oil is hot, add enough to make one layer. Use extreme caution as hot oil can burn you badly.
Fry the chips on one side until browned, then flip them over and brown the other side. With a metal spatula, remove them to a plate.
Sprinkle on salt and seasonings. Cool slightly and enjoy. Eat them hot or cold.
Directions for baked chips
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
Cut the tortillas into wedges or strips and then place them on a large baking sheet. With a pastry brush, lightly coat the chips with oil (try olive oil for this). Sprinkle the chips with salt and seasonings.
When the oven is hot, place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 to 10 minutes or until browned. If you’d like, you can flip the chips over halfway through baking.
With a metal spatula remove the chips to a plate to cool.
Makes 3 to 4 servings.
