  1. Leave it to me to nerd it all up with history, but it’s interesting to note the (Nineteen) Twenties roared largely in contrast with the crisis (multiple ones, actually) looming over the decade’s cradle. After surviving a world war, world revolution and pandemic devastation far beyond anything COVID can dream, it was time to party!

Not nearly as dire now as it was a century ago in our great-grandparents’ day, but still, 2020 was pretty awful. Maybe not as bad as the One-Two-Three punch trench warfare, Bolsheviks and the Spanish flu delivered, but still worthy an exuberant sigh of relief when it’s over. Once COVID is sent packing, perhaps we’re due another roaring ten years.

Nah, make it forty years. We just will skip the Crash, the Depression and the second war. Plus, after bars are “allowed” to open again, it’ll be like a second lifting of Prohibition!

    1. Nerdy, no… bookish, knowledgeable, well-informed, erudite, perhaps even pedagogical… but nerdy no way! Stupid is overrated… even though we’re all guilty of it sometimes 🙂

The parallels to nearly 100 years ago can’t be exaggerated enough… luckily though we are in a much better place don’t you think? We have technology to help keep us connected, share photos, recipes, silly cat videos, etc. We are not involved in a disastrous world war… and we can legally drink!

Funny the roaring 20s was bestowed this moniker sans alcohol… oh but then there was the invention of the speakeasy. Mankind always has their ways of getting around a problem!

      1. Oh definitely, JoAnn, I agree. Awful as the last twelve months have been, our great-grandparents overcame far worse a century ago. Naturally, immediacy goads us to label the situation the “worst-ever,” but really, we do hyperventilate, don’t we? Plus, as you notice, we have resources our ancestors scarcely could’ve imagined.

Ah yes, Prohibition v. speakeasies, bootleggers, etc. Just a variant on our species’ perpetual contention between idealism and realism. The dynamics remain constant; only the terms and issues change.

  2. Good Lord!! Hope this isn’t going to be a repeat of the 20’s only with added twits and tweets! In spite of the great literature that showed up, I’d prefer to just enjoy a season of less turmoil!

    1. That’s why it’s called the “new” roaring 20s… bigger, better and more improved! I wasn’t alive in the 1920s myself so I can’t really comment on that too much except to go by others’ opinions. 😂🥳
