Moody Monday: Are you a driver or a passenger?

When it comes to mental health, a driver is someone who takes control of their life while a passenger is someone who lets other people take control.

It’s not always easy to take the driver role though when you’re not feeling mentally well. Trust me, I know. So many horrible and hurtful things may happen to us that are completely out of our control. Sometimes we just want someone to take the wheel of our lives and steer us to a better place.

Unfortunately, not all of us have an ideal support system of a supportive family, caring friends and unwavering faith. We may be surrounded by other people who are struggling themselves and thus cannot help us. Playing the blame game and pointing fingers may feel good in the short term but in the long term it gets us absolutely nowhere.

Be the driver

Something I’ve learned about my own mental health is that I am the one who needs to be the driver. I need to play the biggest role in my own recovery. Other people may be able to help but really it’s ultimately up to me to save myself. No one else can do it for me.

When I’m down in dumps, and feeling the lowest of the low, I use this knowledge to bounce me back.

Ask the universe?

What about faith? Isn’t God always supposed to be there to help us? What about the universe? I’ve heard people say “just ask the universe and the universe will deliver.”

I don’t profess to have all the answers but what I’ve come to believe is that we ourselves have been bestowed with many God-like powers… right inside of us.

Think about it. We have the power to give life and take it away. We have the power to love and foster love or to hate and foster hate. We have the choice to remain where we are or work to get to a better place.

By no means am I here to blame anyone for their own mental health woes. Those of us who suffer have legitimate reasons. Many of us have been hurt deeply by people we trusted.

We have to choose to rise above it and keep pushing. We have to be strong. Drivers are not easily led nor are they easily manipulated. Drivers absorb information and determine the best way to use it. Drivers know there’s a lesson to be learned in everything.

So what about it? Are you ready to take the wheel in your mental health journey or do you want to remain a passenger and let everything be done for you. Each of us has the power to do it!

Have a lovely Moody Monday!
